| # 136 SMALL IONA CROSS | ||||
|
This cross design comes from a recumbent cross-slab on the Isle of Iona. It has an outer circle, symbolizing heaven. The interior is filled with knotwork which is endless. Fourteen centuries ago Iona was the center of the Christian world in the West. Iona was the place of final rest for 48 kings of Scotland (including MacBeth), four Irish and eight Norwegian kings. From this sacred burial place came a large collection of West Highland sculptured slabs, a product of Ionan workmanship of the highest quality. |
