The Farr Stone, a cross-slab from Sutherland, is a very fine piece of Celtic Art. Around the outside of the cross there is interlaced knotwork merging into ramshorn designs. But the cross itself provides a most unusual symbolism. The shaft, representing the world-axis rising up to the circle of heaven with the central spiral representing the Divinity. In addition, the shaft rises from a hemispherical mound with two winged beasts with their necks intertwined inside the mound, the symbolism reminds us of Vortigern’s’s tower in the Arthurian legends. The tower would not up for Vortigern because he had not subdued the beasts beneath. Or, he had not achieved peace within himself.
