| # 155 KILMARTIN CROSS | ||||
|
Kilmartin, in western Argyll, has been a sacred and ritual landscape since early prehistoric times as evidenced by the forest circle of stones, dolmens, and burial cairns. The site overlooks the fertile Kilmartin valley and Dunadd, the impressive hill-fort and capitol of the ancient kingdom of Dalriada. The small stone church at Kilmartin protects a large collection of ancient carved stones - many of which are grave slabs of crusader knights. Protected inside the church are two carved stone crosses. The cross we have called “Kilmartin Cross” is much the older of the two and is delightful in its clear, simple design of the diagonal key pattern. |
